What is electric dipole moment?

  Electric dipole is nothing but the presence of two identical but opposite charges. The distance between them can be anything from some millimetre to infinity, but the dipole present should be finite.

  Electric dipole is a vector quantity which is expressed by the product of the charge (magnitude) and the distance between the charges. The direction of the electric dipole is from negative charge to positive charge along the charge lines. This whole system is termed as electric dipole. There is a torque present when this dipole is subjected to an electric field. The torque can be represented as T = P x E.

Where p = q.d
P = dipole,
q= charge of the electric dipole particle,
d = distance between the charges,
T = torque,
E = electric field intensity.
  For atoms and molecules where the distance measurement is pretty tough there the concept of electric dipole moment is applied.
