Type Of DC Motors
Similar to a dc generators, the dc motors may also be put into the following three categories on the basis of field excitation:
1) Shunt motor- field winding in shunt with the armature
2) Series motor- field winding in series with the armature
3) compound motor- 1 field winding in series with armature and another in shunt
1. Shunt Motor :
Field winding is placed in shunt with the armature. This winding draws a separate current I sh from the mains. The field winding consists of a latge number of fine wires on each pole. Usually winding on all the poles are connected in series.
2. Series Motor.
The field winding is placed in series with the armature. Thus the armature current Ia itself flows through the field winding. Sieries field winding consists of a few turns of thick copper wire on each pole and all these winding on different poles are connected in series.
3. Compound Motor.
Compound motor uses two field winding. The series winding is placed in series with the supply and the armature shown in figure as. it consists of a few turns of thick copper wire on each pole, all connected in series. The shunt winding is placed in parallel with the armature as asown in figure. The shunt field winding consists of a large numbernof fine wire on each pole, all connected in series.
