Advantages :

1) Occupies less space.
2) Design & installation is simple.
3) Less quantity of water required for cooling purpose.
4) Overall capital cost is less than steam plant.
5) Can be started quickly.
6) More efficient than steam plant.
7) There is no problem of Ash handling.
8) Less supervision required.
9) They can respond to varying loads              Without any difficulty.
10) Can be used in emergency, e.g hospitals,  cinema houses.

Dis-advantages:

1) For diesel power plant high maintanance and operating cost is required.
2) Diesel is costly, therefore high running cost.
3) Smaller capacity. Suitable for generation of small amount of power.
4) The plant cost per KW iz comparatively more.
5) The life of diesel power plant is small due to high maintanance.
7) Noise is serious problem in diesel power plant.
8) Diesel power plant cannot be constructed for large scale.

Applications:

1) They can be used as peak load plant for some other types of power plant.
2) They can be used as standby power plants.
3) They are quite suitable for mobile power generation and are widely used in transportation.
4) They can be used for electrical power generation in capicities from 100 to 5000 H.P.
